Over 230,000 children across Wales ready for Urdd’s World Cup Jambori

After weeks of practising, today (10 November) over 230,300 children across Wales will join together for the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Jambori Cwpan y Byd, Wales’s World Cup Singalong.

Since September, 230,372 children from 1071 schools across Wales have responded to the Urdd’s call to sign up for the big event.  The Urdd World Cup Jambori takes place on Thursday 10 November giving children across Wales an opportunity to show their support to the national team and join in the World Cup celebrations.

The Jambori is being produced by the Urdd in partnership with S4C, Stwnsh Sadwrn, BBC Cymru Wales, S4C and FAW and is part of the Welsh Government Team Wales World Cup campaign.  The Urdd’s World Cup Jambori will be held live on Zoom from 10:30am, as well as featuring live on BBC Radio Cymru, Radio Wales and BBC Radio Five Live programmes during the morning.

Today over 230,300 children across Wales will come together digitally for the national singalong: singing the Jambori favourites as well as brand new World Cup themed songs.  Special video messages will also be shared by the First Minister, Mark Drakeford as well as members of the Wales football team to thank the children for their support. The Jambori will finish with a special appearance by Dafydd Iwan as children across Wales join the Welsh legend to sing Wales’ World Cup anthem ‘Yma o Hyd’.

Sian Lewis, Urdd Chief Executive said:

“The Urdd have been blown away by the positive response by primary schools across Wales to Jambori Cwpan y Byd, Wales’s World Cup Singalong. We always had a centenary Jambori up our sleave for the autumn, and what a way to continue the celebrations – by aiming high and getting behind our national team we’re bringing together 230,372children across Wales to give Cymru the send-off they deserve!

“It’s vitally important for the Urdd that every child in Wales had an opportunity to join in the World Cup Jambori. The event had to be welcoming and accessible for all, that’s why the Urdd provided English lyrics as well as phonetic versions on our website so that learners and non-Welsh speakers could all join in the fun. It’s exciting to see that over 600 second language primary schools have accepted our invitation to join the event.

“On behalf of the organisation I would like to thank all the partners involved for their support for the Urdd World Cup Jambori.”

As well as preparing their singing voices, the Urdd are asking schools to allow everyone to wear red in a bid to turn Wales red in support of the Wales going to the World Cup. Registration for the free event is still open and all schools are still encouraged to take part.  Schools can register for the Jambori, download all songs and lyrics as well as check information for any last-minute questions by visiting www.urdd.cymru/en/Jambori.
