Bethan is from Newcastle Emlyn, attended Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn and now works at Cylch Meithrin Teifi. Bethan was nominated for Apprentice of the Month for her commitment to learning. Ceris Rees, Cylch Leader, explained that “Bethan works independently and the course has given her the confidence she needed.”
Why did you start your apprenticeship with the Urdd?
I’ve worked at Cylch Meithrin Teifi for the past 5 years. My Meithrin leader (Ceris Rees) and I have looked into a number of different childcare courses, but none were able to work around my job and busy home life. When Ceris received an email regarding this apprenticeship, it was perfect.
What do you enjoy most about your job and how has the apprenticeship affected your work?
I love spending time with the children we care for. Seeing them smiling, laughing and enjoying their time at the Meithrin makes my job very rewarding. The apprenticeship has helped me gain so much confidence in my job role and improved my understanding of child development and how they interpret things, which in turn contributes towards planning activities and also how I respond to the children.
What does completing your apprenticeship in Welsh/bilingually mean to you?
Welsh is my second language and I do lack confidence, especially when writing in Welsh. Being able to do the course bilingually has been fantastic. I'm proud to be Welsh and feel privileged to be able to speak two languages.
What are your interests outside work?
I love spending time with my family. I have an 11 year old son, an 8 year old daughter, a fiancée and a small dog. We have a weekly movie night with lots of snack and cuddles. We also go for lots of dog walks, which the children like to moan about, but they do really enjoy.
In what way has your apprenticeship contributed to your personal development?
I have gained so much confidence in my job. My knowledge and understanding of the role have improved greatly regarding safeguarding, the importance of being inclusive and the health and wellbeing of the children.
What do you hope to do after your apprenticeship?
I plan on continuing to work at Cylch Meithrin Teifi, doing the job I thoroughly enjoy.
Describe your duties.
My duties are to safeguard, care for and help aid in the development of pre-school children in a school like routine/ environment. I also help to maintain a clean and safe environment within my workplace for all to enjoy.
Describe your experience in 3 words.
Comfortable, convenient and rewarding.
Would you like to add anything to your story.
My Assessor Sonia and my Cylch Meithrin Leader Ceris have been amazing and I am so grateful to them both. I would really like for them to be mentioned in recognition for all the help, support and encouragement they have given to me throughout my apprenticeship.
