Catrin Awel (LEVEL 2) APPRENTICE OF THE MONTH
April 2020
Catrin is from Clydach, Swansea. She attended Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe and then decided to apply for a sports apprenticeship with the Urdd. Here's more about her story!
Why did you choose to apply for an apprenticeship with the Urdd?
I chose to do the apprenticeship because it is a great opportunity to broaden my personal skills and learn a variety of new skills. Also, I obviously love sports so it seemed like the perfect job for me!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy being able to teach different children new skills and see their joy as they succeed in something new!
How important is it to do your apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh?
I think it's important to have opportunities within communities to do sport through the medium of Welsh so being able to provide this is a privilege for me. It shows children that the Welsh language is alive and that it's possible to enjoy sport through the medium of Welsh!
How has doing the apprenticeship affected your personal development?
The apprenticeship has taught me how to deal with a variety of different situations, including situations that used to make me feel uncomfortable. I've developed a lot of confidence through the training.
Briefly describe your duties.
As part of my apprenticeship, I run a variety of children's sports clubs in my area. Also if I need to contact schools perhaps to arrange taster sessions, I would do so. Sessions need to be planned and prepared for each club. I also deal with the money that comes from the clubs I run.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy walking the dogs with the family, I have two big dogs so they need lots of walking! I'm also often out with friends socializing or out on the bike!
