A chat with Cai Powell-Roberts
APPRENTICE OF THE MONTH - February 2020
Cai comes from a small village called Talwrn, in the heart of Anglesey which is 'in the middle of nowhere!' He attended Talwrn Primary School - a small school with 32 pupils in total! He then attended Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni. Cai is now a sports apprentice in the Anglesey area.
Why did you choose to apply for an apprenticeship with the Urdd?
I thought it was a great opportunity to start my journey as a sports coach! The Urdd offers many different opportunities and qualifications that develop individuals to become the best coach you can be. Also, having a salary for all of this was a big advantage.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I've always loved sport, and also coaching, so I felt that this apprenticeship was a great opportunity for me to gain new experiences. Also, I like to give children new opportunities, that wasn't around when I was their age.
How important is it to do your apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh?
It means a lot to me. Welsh is the language I've always spoken to all my family and friends, so it's nice to be able to do all my work through the Welsh language. I feel that this apprenticeship is helping to improve my Welsh also, which will be beneficial for my future.
How has doing the apprenticeship affected your personal development?
It has given me a lot more confidence. I am now used to speaking in front of a lot of people and coaching many children. This has given me confidence if at some point in my personal life I might want to speak in front of many people. The apprenticeship has also helped me learn the different ways of coaching children.
Briefly describe your duties.
I go around schools and communities running different sports clubs. So my duties include calling the schools to organize these clubs, booking the center if needed, arranging and planning the session and also dealing with money.
What are your interests outside of work?
I play football most days, and travel a lot for Saturday games. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and try to go away to different countries as often as I can.
Describe your experience of doing an apprenticeship with the Urdd in 3 words!
