A Chat with Morgan Lewis - March 2021 Apprentice of the Month

Morgan is from Cardiff and lives in the Gabalfa area. He went to Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, and he is now completing an Activity Leadership apprenticeship with the Urdd.

Why did you decide to take on an apprenticeship with the Urdd?

As part of my Bac work at school, I had to do voluntary work for 30 hours. I decided to volunteer at my local club and coached different sports. I enjoyed coaching so I did some research into sports jobs.

In primary school I was a member of the Urdd, taking part in clubs and the eisteddfod every year. This is why doing an apprenticeship with the Urdd appealed to me.

What do you enjoy most about the apprenticeship?

Working with children and seeing their skills and confidence increase. I like the fact that I can improve the skills and techniques of the children I train and see their development.

What do you think about undertaking an apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh?

I live in Cardiff and have been a Welsh speaker all my life, I love speaking Welsh and improving my skills.

What are your interests outside of work?

I'm a huge supporter of Cardiff City. I have been a season ticket holder since I was young, watching every game at home and away. I like going to the gym and going out on my bike as much as I can.

How has doing the apprenticeship affected your personal development?

By working as a trainer, I have greatly developed my confidence since starting the apprenticeship, by talking to parents and participants in my activities. Going on calls and doing group tasks with different people in the Urdd has also contributed to developing my confidence.

What are you hoping to do after completing the apprenticeship?

After completing my apprenticeship, I hope to continue working with the Urdd, and develop my sports coaching skills and techniques.

Briefly describe your duties.

At the Urdd, I train participants and try to improve their skills and techniques in different sports. I help other Urdd staff too.
