Rhian comes from the small village of Tal-y-bont, 7 miles north of Aberystwyth. She attended Tal-y-bont Primary School and then Penweddig High School. She is now a Classroom Assistant and is completing a Sports apprenticeship with the Urdd.
Why did you decide to take up a Sports apprenticeship with the Urdd?
The opportunity came to do the apprenticeship whilst still working as a Classroom Assistant in Ysgol Penllwyn. I'm very interested in sport, so I was ready to further develop my skills when I joined the apprenticeship.
What do you enjoy most about your job and how has the apprenticeship affected it?
I love working with children and seeing them develop as they go from Foundation Phase to Key Stage 2. I am also very creative so I can help children develop their creative skills. The apprenticeship has kept me very busy and I have learned many new skills and knowledge that will help me whilst taking sports lessons / sessions.
How important is it to do your apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh?
I am very proud of the Welsh language and have been learning through the medium of Welsh all my life, so it is important for me to continue learning in the language.
How has doing the apprenticeship affected your personal development?
I've learnt a lot of new skills and this has given me a lot more confidence to teach in front of a large class with other teachers watching.
Briefly describe your duties.
I am a Key Stage 2 Classroom Assistant at Penllwyn Primary School and I help children within the class to develop their skills within different subjects.
