History

In May 2019, a new three-year partnership was announced between the Urdd and international agency United Purpose to provide young apprentices with opportunities to gain experience working in countries across Africa, Asia and South America.

Since then, a group of the Urdd sports staff, apprentices and volunteers have visited Moving The Goalposts charity in Kilifi, Kenya in 2019, 2023 and 2024.

Moving the Goalpost (MTG) is a community-based organization based in Kenya, particularly focused on empowering girls and young women through sports, primarily football. Established in 2001, MTG uses football as a tool to promote leadership, life skills, education, and health awareness among girls in rural and marginalized communities, especially in coastal Kenya.

Here are some of the main goals and activities of MTG:

  1. Girls' Empowerment: By organizing football leagues and training sessions, MTG gives girls a safe space to play, build confidence, and develop leadership skills.

  2. Education and Life Skills: The organization incorporates life skills education into its programs, focusing on topics such as sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, human rights, and financial literacy.

  3. Leadership Development: Girls are encouraged to take on leadership roles within their teams, such as being captains, referees, or coaches, which fosters responsibility and decision-making skills.

  4. Community Engagement: MTG works closely with communities to address gender-based discrimination and advocate for girls' rights, aiming to create more inclusive and supportive environments.

  5. Health and Wellbeing: Through its initiatives, MTG promotes awareness of health issues like HIV/AIDS, menstruation, and reproductive health, empowering girls to make informed decisions about their health.

MTG has been recognized globally for its innovative approach to empowering young women and promoting gender equality through sports.
