Ela Roberts is from Bangor and attended Garnedd Primary School, and Tryfan Secondary School. She is now nearly at the end of her year doing an Activity Leadership apprenticeship with the Urdd.

Why did you choose to apply for an apprenticeship with the Urdd?

While I was doing my A Levels, I volunteered in Urdd’s Sports Sessions for two years and I really enjoyed myself. So, I thought it was a good idea to do this apprenticeship and an experience I would really enjoy.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

I enjoy the variety that comes with the job in terms of the different sports and working with children and people from different backgrounds and different ages daily. I like that every day is different, so you don’t know what to expect. Working with a supportive and fun team of people is an important part of the job.

How important is it to do your apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh?

Welsh is my first language and I feel comfortable and confident using the Welsh language. So, having a job where I can use the Welsh language all day every day is great and one of the reasons why I’ve enjoyed this apprenticeship so much.

How has doing the apprenticeship affected your personal development?

I think that hosting sessions by myself and speaking in front of a crowd of people has developed my confidence. By now, I feel a lot more comfortable speaking in front of crowds.

What are your interests outside of work?

I've always enjoyed keeping fit and active in some way or another; that being team sports like net ball or hockey and also individual sports like swimming and going to the gym.

I also really enjoy watching crime documentaries and mystery programmes on Netflix in the evenings, and at the moment I’m making the most out of ‘Disney plus’ which is great!

What are you hoping to do after completing the apprenticeship?

Umm good question... I’m not entirely sure at the moment, but I’m very interested in mental health, so going to university to study Mental Health Nursing or Sociology is definitely an option in the future.

Briefly describe your duties.

Our responsibilities change weekly, but briefly, we host at least 2 sports session a day, sometimes in a school during school hours and sometimes after school. We deal with money as well as organise sessions and talks with schools
