Calon 2026

Urdd’s Youth Theatre Company introduces Calon; a brand new musical full of the iconic songs of Caryl Parry Jones

Iconic songs

In Cardiff in August 2026, Cwmni Theatr yr Urdd staged Calon; a brand new, Welsh-language musical full of Caryl Parry Jones’ iconic songs.

The show

The show was performed at the Wales Millennium Centre’s Donald Gordon Theatre, the second largest stage in Europe, between 27 and 29 August 2026.

This is the theatre company’s biggest show since relaunching in 2022, during the Urdd’s centenary year, thanks to support from the Welsh Government.

Calon opened to an audience of over 1,300 with over 3,500 tickets sold across its four performances.

The Cast

A cast of over 100 young people, aged between 15 and 25 and from all over Wales, performed in the musical with a live band. There were also opportunities for young people to work on all elements of stage work, including technical, designing and costumes. The young people were mentored through the process of creating the show by professional artists and stage crew.

Behind Calon

Calon is jam-packed with the now legendary and extremely popular songs written by Caryl over 40 years, including the iconic anthem, Calon and some of Eden’s songs. Caryl co-worked on the musical with her cousin and singer Non Parry, along with two of her daughters, the movement director and choreographer Elan Isaac and actress, singer and presenter Miriam Isaac.

In Partnership with Theatr Cymru

We are very pleased to have partnered with Theatr Cymru who supported us in staging the musical. As part of this special partnership, Rhian Blythe – Theatre Cymru’s Associate Director, directed Calon, bringing in her wide range of experience as a director and actor to the young performers.
