The Urdd Apprenticeships Department is a leading training provider, offering high‑quality apprenticeships since 2014.

We specialise in Welsh‑medium and bilingual programmes that empower workforces across the sectors of Sport, Youth Work, the Outdoors, Education and Childcare. Our aim is to nurture practical skills, professional confidence, and genuine development opportunities for learners of all ages and backgrounds.

To complete an apprenticeship, you need to be working for an employer or about to start working. Sometimes there is an opportunity to be employed by the Urdd, but usually you work for one of our partners across Wales. You don’t have to work for the Urdd to do an apprenticeship with us!

It’s also important to note that the training is free for you and for your employer, as the apprenticeship programme is funded by the Welsh Government, through MEDR.

Work for the Urdd as an apprentice

The Urdd usually recruits apprentices once a year, with the Urdd acting as both the employer and the training provider. Typically, these opportunities are within our Sports Department or in our Residential Centres.

The Urdd offers full time jobs to those who are looking to gain experience, qualifications and earn money at the same time.
Anyone aged 16 and above can apply for a job with the Urdd as an apprentice and we have varying opportunities across Wales.

We’re looking for individuals who have an interest in sports or outdoor activities and who are ready to work with children and young people.

If successful, you will develop your skills with our experienced Sports and Apprenticeship Departments to learn how to successfully lead activities for children and young people across Wales.

How it works

To start an apprenticeship in Wales, you need to:

  • Be aged 16 or over (no upper age limit)
  • Live in Wales
  • Not be in full-time education
  • Not be in receipt any other Welsh Government funding

If you are looking to undertake an apprenticeship qualification as a way of upskilling in your current role:

  • Be working for at least 16 hours a week
  • Have the support of your employer to undertake the qualification
  • Be working in a qualification-relevant role
  • Be employed for at least 51% of your contracted hours in Wales

• All apprenticeship programmes we offer are fully funded by the Welsh Government, so there is no cost to the individual or employer.

• Training can begin at any time throughout the year.

• You don’t need a requisite level of Welsh just the willingness to improve your language ability.

All apprenticeship programmes include elements of essential skills. The HWB specialises in helping apprentices develop their communication, numeracy and digital literacy skills. Depending on your current qualifications, some essential skills qualifications will need to be completed as part of your programme. Our expert team will guide you every step of the way.
